Repatriation to Poland
Repatriation to Poland is a state program for the return of ethnic Poles to their homeland. It provides the right to obtain citizenship through a simplified procedure for those with direct ancestors who were Polish citizens and resided in Poland.
According to the repatriation law, direct descendants of Poles (children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-great-grandchildren), up to and including the fourth generation, are eligible to obtain a visa and subsequently become citizens.
There are two ways to arrange repatriation:
1. Obtaining a Pole’s Card:
First, a Pole’s Card is issued at the Polish consulate. Here, you must provide documentary evidence of your Polish roots and pass an exam on your knowledge of the Polish language and culture.
After moving to Poland, the Pole’s Card is used to obtain a permanent residence permit, and after one year of legal residence, you can apply for Polish citizenship.
2. Direct Repatriation Visa (for persons of Polish descent):
Issued by the consul based on confirmed Polish descent if the applicant or their ancestors were deported to the USSR or exiled for political reasons.
Grants the right to enter, obtain permanent residence at the border, and receive financial assistance from the state.
Citizenship under this program can be obtained after three years of continuous residence in the country.
The basic package of documents includes:
* A completed application form and the applicant’s passport
* Birth and marriage certificates (all documents confirming the relationship)
* Documents issued by Polish government agencies confirming Polish descent
* The applicant’s CV
Poland also has a program to assist repatriates.
The Polish Tax Relief Upon Return to Poland (Ulga na Powrót) is a tax benefit for individuals who transfer their tax residency to Poland after living abroad for at least three years. This benefit exempts them from paying income tax in Poland up to 85,528 zlotys per year for four consecutive tax years.
